15 Hidden Toxins in Your Home That Could Be Affecting Your Hormones, Energy, and Gut Health

Uncategorized Mar 18, 2026

You've probably heard my story by now but for a long time, I thought I was doing everything right for my health.

I was eating clean, working out, taking supplements… but I still felt tired, inflamed, and like my body was always playing catch-up.

What I didn’t realize at the time was that the problem wasn’t just food. It was my environment.

Your home can either support your hormones and nervous system… or stress them every single day without you realizing it. The good news is you don’t have to live in a bubble. You just need to know what to look for so you can start making better swaps over time.

Here are some of the biggest hidden toxins I still see in most homes.

  1. Hidden mold
Small leaks, old drywall, damp bathrooms, and humid closets can all grow mold without you noticing. Even low exposure can affect energy, brain fog, sinuses, skin, and hormone balance.

  2. Conventional cleaning products
Most sprays, wipes, and antibacterial cleaners contain harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrance that can irritate the lungs and disrupt hormones. If it smells strong, your body is probably reacting to it.

  3. Flame-retardant furniture and fabrics
Mattresses, couches, carpet padding, and even some pajamas are treated with flame-retardant chemicals. These compounds don’t just stay in the fabric — they end up in your dust and in your body over time.

  4. Nonstick cookware
Scratched nonstick pans and cheap bakeware can release unwanted chemicals when heated. Switching to stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic is one of the easiest upgrades you can make.

  5. Synthetic fragrance
Candles, air fresheners, perfume, laundry sheets, and scented cleaners can contain dozens of hidden chemicals under the word “fragrance.” These are known hormone disruptors and can trigger headaches, fatigue, and skin issues.

  6. Old makeup and skincare
Expired products, older formulas, and conventional cosmetics may contain parabens, heavy metals, and preservatives that add to your body’s toxic load.

  7. Pesticide-covered produce
Apples, berries, spinach, lettuce, and peppers are some of the highest-sprayed foods. Washing well and choosing organic when possible can help reduce the amount your body has to detox.

  8. Tap water contaminants
Depending on where you live, your water may contain chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, or residue from old pipes. A quality water filter is one of the best investments you can make for your health.

  9. Plastic food storage
Heating food in plastic, drinking from plastic bottles, and storing leftovers in cheap containers can expose you to BPA and phthalates, which are linked to hormone imbalance.

  10. Scented laundry products
Your clothes sit on your skin all day, so detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheets matter more than people think. Fragrance in laundry products is one of the most constant exposures most families have.

  11. Cheap furniture and off-gassing materials
Pressed wood, foam cushions, and synthetic fabrics can release VOCs into the air, especially when new. This can affect headaches, sleep, and overall inflammation.

  12. Dust buildup
Dust isn’t just dirt. It can hold chemicals, microplastics, pet dander, and flame-retardant residue. Regular vacuuming, air filters, and opening windows more often can make a big difference.

  13. Pesticides around the home
Bug spray, weed killer, ant traps, and lawn chemicals can linger longer than you think, especially for kids and pets who spend time on the floor or outside.

  14. Ultra-processed foods
Food dyes, preservatives, and additives don’t just affect your gut — they add to the total stress load your liver has to process every day.

  15. Constant EMF exposure
Phones in your pocket, Wi-Fi next to your bed, and electronics running all day long keep your nervous system stimulated. You don’t have to get rid of everything, but small boundaries can help your body recover better.

You do not have to fix everything overnight.

I didn’t.

Low-toxin living is not about perfection.
It’s about reducing what you can so your body has more room to heal, balance hormones, and actually have energy again.

Start with the things you use every day, those are the ones that matter the most.
